About Betsy

Throughout my years of tutoring, I have found myself learning how to be more effective, just as much as I have been instilling learning in the students I work with.  I have worked with children as young as 8, as well as learners more than twice my age.  My focus has always been to instill confidence in my students’ ability to use logic and reasoning to solve any problem that life throws their way.

When I tutored on a volunteer and professional basis throughout high school and college, my focus was on specific subjects I had already taken.  Tutoring in the disability services center at NDSU was especially rewarding because I know what it is like learn in an environment that wasn’t always set up optimally for my brain.  I have often found myself relating to my students with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and other processing disorders.  I consistently work to find ways to explain things as many times as it takes from different angles until it clicks, as well as keeping attention and enthusiasm during sessions and allowing breaks if needed.

Tutoring changed when the pandemic opened the world to virtual tutoring.  There are a LOT of benefits, including opening up scheduling for busy students, allowing students anywhere to access tutoring – even if they are away from home, retaining 1:1 help from the comfort of a quiet space at home for an hour in between things with no drive time.  We have cameras on, screen sharing capabilities, and a virtual whiteboard which is faster and less awkward than writing and moving your hand and sitting real close to let them see.
